The protection of one of the most valuable areas - Punios šilas forest at Nemunas Loops Regional Park - is being increased 5 times, expanding the area of the nature reserve.

The compromise decision was made after the process of adjusting the planning scheme of the Nemunas Loops Regional Park, which took several years.

After increasing the territory of the strict reserve five times, the residents will be able to visit the priority areas of the Punios šilas forest Landscape Reserve, genetic forest reserves and ecological protection. The procedure for visiting the nature strict reserve will be established in the regulations of the Nemunas Loops Regional Park.

It is expected that from 456 ha to 2.2 thousand. ha the increase of the Punios šilas forest Nature Reserve will improve the conservation status of this unique forest ecosystem. When protecting forest ecosystems in nature reserves, their area is considered an important factor: some protected species living in forests can survive for a long time only in larger, less fragmented forest massifs.

Punia Forest is an important part of the Natura 2000 network of sites. It is home to and preserves the western taiga, broadleaf and mixed forests and other habitats of European Community importance, and the rare species in Europe such as the hermit beetle, Oxyporus mannerheimii and the Western barbastelle. Modifications to the boundaries and management plans of the Punia forest are necessary measures to protect them.
