WINTER AT THE DZUKIJA NATIONAL PARK
16 bison are spending the winter in the enclosures of the Stėgaliai Bison Reserve in Dzūkija National Park. The entire herd is centered around a bull named “Dunst,” who arrived from Germany.
This year, the herd is expected to welcome the bull’s offspring. It will be interesting to see if the birth of twins, which occurred in this Stėgaliai bison enclosure, will happen again... This took place in 2024, when the bull sired twin calves of different sexes. This was the first such case recorded in Europe since 1945. These twins grew up successfully in the bison enclosure and were released into the wild outside the enclosure last May.
A herd of 20 bison currently lives in the wild within (and beyond) the territory of Dzūkija National Park, and they also come to the bison enclosure to receive supplementary feed.
