KAMANOS STATE STRICT NATURE RESERVE CELEBRATES 45TH ANNIVERSARY
The Kamanos State Strict Nature Reserve in north-western Lithuania was established in 1979 and this year marks its 45th anniversary.
Kamanos State Strict Nature Reserve was established to preserve the largest and most valuable swamp and mixed forest ecosystem of the clay plains of northern Lithuania, with its typical flora and fauna.
Over thousands of years, the Kamanos marsh has developed a high peat dome made up of different wetland centres, eight shallow lakes situated in the lowlands between ridges. The peaks of the ridges drowned by the marsh have formed open, clastic swamps with lake complexes.
These flats are important for breeding birds (teal, tit, grouse). Their populations in the Kamanos Marsh are stable. The species that grow here are unique to northern Lithuania.
Kamanos Wetland is included in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. The reserve has also become part of the Natura 2000 ecological network of European importance - an Important Bird and Habitat Conservation Area.
