GOOD NEWS FOR NATURE

This year saw a record number of aquatic warblers, one of the rarest birds in Europe. During the census, naturalists counted 376 singing males.

It is clear that the population of aquatic warblers in Lithuania is growing and remains stable in the long term. In some areas, there has been a noticeable improvement in the condition of their habitats. This is the result of our long-term work with farmers: restored wetlands, well-managed water regimes, and proper mowing. All of this has created more favorable conditions not only for aquatic warblers, but also for other wildlife in wetlands and floodplains.

The aquatic warbler is one of the rarest birds in continental Europe. Over the last century, its population has declined by as much as 95%. Currently, there are only about 8,000 singing males left in the world, and the decline continues, mainly due to the deteriorating condition of their habitats: drainage of marshes, abandonment, or inappropriate farming practices.
