50 YEARS OF THE ČEPKELIAI RESERVE

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Čepkeliai State Nature Reserve.

The purpose of the Čepkeliai State Nature Reserve was to preserve the country's largest high moorland, surrounded by continental dunes, with relict lakes and rare biodiversity unique to the area. The main part of the reserve is occupied by the Čepkeliai marsh.

The Čepkeliai Reserve is not only important in Lithuania. Following Lithuania's accession to the Ramsar Convention, Čepkeliai was included in the list of Wetlands of International Importance. The Čepkeliai Reserve is also part of the European Union's NATURA 2000 network of protected areas. It is a recognised European wilderness area.
