THE MOST INTERESTING PROTECTED SPRUCE TREE IS RENAVO SPRUCE
At the beginning of December, the State Service for Protected Areas launched a vote to choose the most interesting protected tree. People voted both on the Facebook account and in a questionnaire.
The choice was made from among the 5 state-protected spruces:
- The Noriūnai Forest Spruce
- Renavo Spruce
- Sisters Spruces
- Spruce Boba
- Persoksna pyramidal Spruce
In Lithuania more than 500 trees and several groups of trees have been declared protected by the state and municipalities. However, the number of protected spruce trees could be counted on one hand.
When the voting was over and the votes were counted, the title of the most interesting spruce went to the Renavo Spruce. It is a spruce with an exceptionally thick trunk and it is recognised as the thickest spruce in Lithuania.
The trunk of the Renavo spruce has a circumference of 3.93 m (almost 4 metres!) at a height of 1.3 m. The age of this spruce estimated to be more than 150 years old.
The thick spruce tree stands in the park of Renavas Manor (Mažeikiai district). The protection zone around the natural monument consists of a five-metre wide strip.
