YOUNG CAPERCAILLES FROM POLAND ARRIVED TO VIESVILE RESERVE

Two-month-old capercailles from Poland were brought to Viesvilė State Nature Reserve's greyhound reserve.

The breeding of these rare and endangered birds has started in Lithuania's only State Nature Reserve of Viesvilė. The main contact with Pollish colleagues is not only in the acquisition of capercailles, but also in the exchange of experience on the peculiarities of breeding and rearing these birds in captivity.

Last year, Polish colleagues from the Ležaisko Forest Enterprise expressed their interest in acquiring the Belarusian capercailles offspring kept in the Viesvilė Reserve's capercailles breeding farm. It was decided to exchange the chicks hatched this year in both kennels. Thus, four capercailles, one male and three females, aged a couple of months, were brought to Viesvilė Reserve. In exchange, the Poles brought two genetically valuable males, whose parents come from the Nalibokai Forest in western Belarus.

The capercailles breeding farm in the Viesvilė State Nature Reserve aims to ensure the genetic diversity of these protected birds. To this end, it cooperates with captive breeders from other countries.

The population of capercailles in Lithuania declined significantly in the 20th century. The capercailles are listed in the Lithuanian Red Data Book and protected throughout Europe through the establishment of Natura 2000 sites.
