OLD VILNIUS LINDEN – HOUSES FOR MANY SPECIES
Near the building of the State Service for Protected Areas, Vilnius Linden, which is more than 300 years old, grows in Sapiegai Park.
The State Service for Protected Areas for the funds of visitors' tickets installed an information stand about this unique natural object. Unfortunately, when a severe storm broke out a year and a half ago, several trunks of the old Vilnius July broke.
We want to be glad that this unique linden is still a little vibrant. In addition, its fallen trunks have become homes for many species. Lichens and mushrooms began to grow here, beetles swarm, melets and other birds fly away.
There are many species of insects, plants, fungi that feed on wood. For example, a very rare and protected gloomy-colored goldenrod lives only in the dreves of old oaks, where there is a brown thrips caused by certain mushrooms.
Old fallen trees are of great importance for the natural ecosystem. In one virtuoso you can find thousands of the most diverse organisms, for which dead wood is both food and habitat.
Biodiversity is interspersed in natural ecosystems.
