On the occasion of World Wetland Day on February 2, the State Service of Protected Areas wants to draw the public's attention to the protection of wetlands in Lithuania. Swamps are also called the kidneys of the planet, because they clean groundwater and help reduce climate change.

Wetlands are special ecosystems that provide a range of ecological, social and economic benefits, including their essential contribution to climate change mitigation.

In order to preserve the remaining wetlands, a number of them are included in the NATURA 2000 network of protected areas of the European Union, and wetlands are also protected according to the RAMSAR convention. Telmological reserves are established to preserve wetlands.

Let's plan to participate in hiking the wetland trails and learn more about this unique ecosystem.

Let's protect wetlands together, because they are very important to all of us.
