GETTING READY FOR THE INTERNATIONAL EUROPARC CONFERENCE
As the year gets underway, work on the organisation of the major international EUROPARC event is gathering pace. The EUROPARC conference, which will bring together guests from protected areas all over Europe, will take place on 7 - 10 October this year in the Nemunas Loops Regional Park, a region renowned for its amazing biodiversity and cultural heritage.
The biennial EUROPARC conference is the premier event for European protected areas and Natura 2000 specialists.
Last week, EUROPARC colleagues Neil McIntosh and Esther Bossink visited Lithuania and together with Dr Agne Jasinavičiūte, Director of the State Service for Protected Areas at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rūta Baškyte, Senior Advisor, and Paulis Čepons, Head of the Dzūkija-Suvalkija Directorate for Protected Territories, they discussed the organisational matters.
The guests liked Birštonas, where all the conditions are in place to organise a conference of this kind, the natural environment and the excellent accessibility of the protected areas.
The main theme of the forthcoming conference, "Nature for people, people for nature", emphasises the interconnection between people and nature and our shared responsibility to protect ecosystems for future generations.
The conference will provide an opportunity to discuss topical issues such as the restoration of ecosystems, which is the focus of the European Union's Nature Restoration Act. This conference promises to be a platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences.
