CURONIAN SPIT TURNS 25 ON THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE LIST
The year 2025 marks a special anniversary - 25 years ago the Curonian Spit was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural landscape. It is a place loved not only by Lithuanian travellers, but also by world travellers, artists and scientists. The Curonian Spit is a unique landscape, created and still being created by a combination of natural elements and human will.
The spit, which stretches for almost a hundred kilometres on the territory of two countries, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. The Curonian Spit is inscribed as a cultural landscape, revealing the relationship between nature and human activity.
Each country is striving for global recognition of its most valuable territories. In Lithuania, there was no doubt that the Curonian Spit was worthy of becoming part of the World Heritage Site. And this is not only a great honour, but also a responsibility. The Curonian Spit National Park has been established here, and the aim is to preserve the unique values of the Curonian Spit for future generations.
The 25th anniversary will be celebrated with a year-long series of events organised by the Curonian Spit National Park Directorate.
